Thank you for the information you have shared with the community regarding Dennis Mize’s life and work; I have really appreciated learning more about him. Also, please let me offer my condolences. While I mourn Mr. Mize’s passing for the loss of all the wonderful future art he might have created for the community, I did not know him personally. You have lost a friend and a business associate, and my sympathies go out to you and his other friends and family. Your tribute page and forum topic are very moving, thank you for sharing your thoughts and impressions and for giving the community a place to mourn.
As much as I have liked and been collecting Mize figures for the past three years, I didn’t realize how many of my personal painting milestones he connected to until recently. The very first figure I ever painted was a copy of the Green Witch you supplied to the Paint ‘n Take at GenCon 2003. That experience was enough to convince me to try miniature painting as a hobby. The very first female figure I ever completed was Dennis’ Laurana the Sorceress, and that’s still one of my favourite sculpts. The first serious painting prize I was fortunate enough to win was for a rendition of Dennis’ Witch of the Darkmoors. I don’t think I’ve truly done justice to one of his figures yet, but I plan to continue to try.

This AD&D Goldmoon was painted by a very young Derk
K. Schubert. He had this to say about Dennis:
Jim, Thanks for posting the fine memorial for Dennis. I
have very fond memories of painting his Official D&D
figures when Ral Partha owned that license and I was
first learning how to shade and highlight my
miniatures. His more recent work for Dark Sword and
for Reaper continually impressed me. I am sorry that
I never got to meet him in person. Now as I am
learning how to sculpt my own figures, Dennis's work
presents an excellent standard to aspire to.
Here are pictures of two Dragonlance figures --
Goldmoon and Dalamar -- which I painted in the early
1990s. Both Dennis and I got better in the fifteen
years since then, but I still consider these among my
favorites. The subtle tilts in Goldmoon's pose convey
her grace and gentleness; Dalamar is more forceful and
arrogant, and his billowing cloak was the perfect
surface for the Larry Elmore fanboy in me to cover
with runes as in Elmore's painting.
This AD&D Dalamar was painted by a very young Derk
K. Schubert.
