Gen Con Indy 2006 Aces of Painting Charity Competition

The Aces Team with Larry Elmore and myself. Everyone is listed down below with individual pics. So no worries!
Wow, what a shocker, Larry Elmore with women all around him?? Go figure...The ladies just love him...

Mr. Jeff Wilhelm unpacks the Dark Sword minis used for the Aces of Painting Charity Event

Jeff starts letting the Aces randomly select their miniature.

A little further down the table of each painter selecting their minis. Susan laughs as she saw what mini she selected. She has only seen it like 5 billion times by now (It was the Green Witch figure from the Paint n' Take area).

Jeff made this custom display base for the 10 miniatures. They are all auctioned off as one lot.
Please note - Jeff Wilhelm does competition quality display bases. Check his site out at - www.DragonForge.com

Larry Elmore did the honors of starting the competition and then Art Wachowski provides the play by play commentary during the 60 minutes.

We were pretty blown away at how fast they can paint these minis up!

Art and myself discuss what tricks to play on the Aces while Larry and Steph are watching on.

Crowd shot - Now, just who is that lady in the black dress there in the middle?? I could be mistaken - but I believe she used to rock the Aces competition? Perhaps she will make an appearance next year to challenge Derek for top honors? Hmmm....

And now Introducing the Gen Con Indy 2006 Aces of Painting Participants....
Each participant had 60 minutes to paint a Dark Sword Miniature.
Each mini was prepped and primed before the competition

Eric Johns - He did some of those killer Wyrd Miniatures paint jobs with the awesome lighting.

Rich Stedman - Rich was called to the mat to defend English Honor at the Aces competition as he almost did not paint as he was not feeling well. His shirt is priceless...

Marike Reimer - Well, this young lady needs no introduction from me. She has taken the painting world by storm in just a few short years. Her Diorama this year (Sadly, not a Dark Sword diorama) was jaw-dropping. She has taken Gen Con Indy Best In Show two years in a row now.

Mr. Derek Schubert (he gets to be called Mr. as he took 1st place in the Aces Event this year once again). Derek is an old school mini painter and gamer. He is also doing some very nice work on the sculpting side of the biz now as well. We will be keeping our eye on this one...

1st Place Winner - Derek did this in 60 minutes folks. Very impressive.

Amy Brehm - Miss Two-Time Dark Sword Award Winner herself. Amy is getting scary good - no question about it.

Zach Lanier - It was hard to get a good pic of Zach as he is one of those "heads-down" painters. He paints for Rackham U.S.

Susan Wachowski - Painting a Green Witch mini!?!?! Of all the minis she could have randomly selected.... Susan paints up the Elmore Dragons line and she also painted up a whole slew of new Dragons for Dark Sword.

She painted the Green Witch.....Green?!?!?!? What gives?

Tom Schadle - Tom had an excellent showing with the Close Combat Mage.

Angela Imrie - Angela digs the Dark Sword line and she is also a big fan of the Hasslefree line of minis from the UK. She likes painting up the ladies and she does a most excellent job. She wanted more skin on the minis we selected for this event.

James Craig - James was a pretty vocal painter who provided a colorful play by play about how much extra time he had to paint extra detail into the mini.

Aces Group Shots And Aces Action Shots

To even the playing field, Derek had to wear the infamous Eye Patch of Victory as he won this event last year.

This pic was taken as the last minute winded down. You can see that they were painting their bases and touching things up.

A number of the painters used their thumbs...

Marike got the messiest thumb award once again...

Look how fast they move! This is Angela in mid-flurry. Now that is Really FAST!!!

Before the event, I asked Marike to give us a demonstration of how FAST their hands move during a speed painting competition for the press. This is not photo-shopped up or anything. She is just THAT fast folks...

Mengu has a special "Speed Painting Competion" camera so us mortals can see them in action.

Mr. Derek Schubert taking his sweet time as he achieves another 1st place in the Aces Competition.

Susan Loves painting Green Witch minis. She will do commissions of this piece for 50% off she loves em so much!

Tom doing his thing.

A rare shot of Zach where you can see part of his face. Notice he is still heads-down. It is just that Mengu with his all-access pass was able to get a perfect angle to snap this pic.

This is what 10 of the top painters in the world can do in just 60 minutes. Pretty dang impessive.
The finished set with display base went for $800.00 at the Charity Auction. The event organizers felt that this was the strongest Aces showing to date.
