Official color schemes and commentary from
George R.R. Martin that he shared with our staff painters

George with a Hawk - ok, how cool is that?
|
Jon Snow
Jon has dark brown hair and dark grey eyes. For his sword Longclaw
- the blade would be dark grey rather than silver, with ripples
in the steel, and the pommel carved white stone with garnet eyes.
His clothing would all be black except perhaps the fur lining his
cloak, which could be black, grey, or white. Metal fastenings --
buckles, buttons, etc. -- should be silver. He spends a lot of time
outdoors, and his skin tone would reflect that. |
Ser Loras The Knight of the Flowers
Ser Loras has brown hair and brown eyes. His shield would display
three golden roses on a green field. His cloak is decorated with hundreds
of small blue forget-me-nots. A couple different ways to approach
his armor: The easiest way would be to do the plate in a dark metallic
green, the mail in gold. All the flowers should be gold as well. Ditto
the jousting scene inlaid on his breastplate. A more ambitious approach
would be to do the chainmail in dark green, the plate in white, and
make the decorations a riot of color -- flowers of all sorts and types,
and the two knights in the jousting scene both barded in their own
colors, even down to the heraldry on their little bitty shields. It
would take a helluva painter to bring that off, however. |
Cersei Lannister
Cersei has golden blond hair and green eyes. Her favorite jewels are
emeralds, which bring out the color of her eyes. Her gown... well,
there's no "right" choice there. She likes green, again,
to match her eyes. She has been known to wear Lannister crimson as
well. |
Jaime Lannister
Jaime has golden blond hair and green eyes. Skin tone perhaps a bit
more tan than his twin's, since he spends more time outdoors in the
sun. There are two possible ways to paint Jaime's armor. If done as
a Lannister, his armor should all be gold, his cloak crimson. If portraying
him as a knight of the Kingsguard, his armor would be enameled white
(not "alwhite" silver, but milk white) chased with gold
(the lion on his breastplate, his knee and shoulder protection, his
spurs, his cloak clasps, etc.). His cloak would be pure white. In
either case, the sword that he is holding should have a gilded blade. |
Melisandre
Melisandre has red hair, red eyes (yes red), and red lips. At her
throat she wears a ruby. Her clothing would be shades of red, here
and there accented with orange or yellow, the colors of flame. Her
skin tone would be very pale, white, a strong contrast to the red. |
Sandor Clegane - The Hound
Sandor has brown hair and dark brown/ black eyes along with weathered
wind-burnt skin tones. The scarred side of his face is a tangle of
black and blood red, dark and angry, shiny with scar tissue. His armor
is dull grey, and shows nicks, dents, and other signs of hard use.
His sword belt and scabbard would be brown. His surcoat could be done
in yellow, bearing the three black dogs of House Clegane on front
and black -- but his brother often wears those arms, so Sandor oft
chooses something else. A plain olive green surcoat would also work.
Or he might garb himself as a Lannister man-at-arms, in a crimson
surcoat, with a small Lannister lion badge over his heart (NOT a large
lion spread across the entire chest, that's reserved for actual Lannisters). |
The Sword Brothers of the Nights Watch - General
Descriptions
Black cloaks, black boots, black armor. Skin and hair color could
be almost anything. The Night's Watch included all sorts of people.
So long as the predominant color of the clothing is black, they will
fit right in. A few non-black items -- jewelry, belts, clasps, whatever
-- are certainly allowable. Everything much more. |
Wildings - General Descriptions
The Wildlings should be a very natural looking fig as they do not have access to colorful dyes and such. The furs would be red/brown, brown, gray, white, etc. The pants/clothes would be more brown and blacks. Every Wildling kind of does their own thing (unlike the Nights Watch) in terms of their clothing. Please note, that they do loot clothes/armor and weapons off of those they kill. So you can work these in as well. On some of their shields you could do scary images as they paint on crude images from time to time to frighten their enemies in battle. Like Demons and such... |
Gold Cloaks - General Descriptions
Well, their cloaks are gold. Not yellow, mind you. Gold. Like the current St. Louis Rams, not the old LA Rams. Helms, breastplate, and chainmail would be black, with gold chasing. Black boots and belts. Other than that, colors can vary. |
Lannister Lady in Waiting
The painters would have a lot of freedom here. Some highborn ladies might dress heraldically, in which case the gown could be painted in the colors of their house and patterned with appropriate arms. But that is by no mean compulsory. No lady would wear the same gown every day. So, really, it's painter's choice. |
Mance Rayder
Mance should be clean shaven. Although a skilled warrior, he doesn't necessarily look like one -- when Jon first enters his presence, he figures either Tormund Giantsbane or Styr the Magnar must be Mance, since they're the two who look the most like warriors. Mance looks more like a bard, and often poses like one south of the Wall. He's of middling height, slender, sharp-faced, with shrewd brown eyes, long brown hair gone mostly grey, a ready smile and a charming manner. No beard. No mustache. Mance's cloak is an important part of his story. It began as an ordinary ranger's cloak: black wool, long, hooded. A shadowcat slashed the hell out of it (and out of Mance). The wildling woman who mended it patched the rents with red silk, so now it's black with long red slashes. Mance is described as wearing fur breeches and a black ringmail shirt. |
Daenerys V1 (with newborn dragons)
Rhaegal - Bright Green scales tinted with bronze
Viserion - Scales of cream with Gold highlights
Drogon (her favorite) - Scales of black - they shimmer like polished metal.
All have large translucent wings. |
